Tayler Hazell, a 32-year-old man, faced a sentencing hearing in the ACT Supreme Court after driving a stolen car while under the influence of drugs, resulting in a collision with two schoolboys outside St Edmund’s College in Canberra. According to ABC News, the incident occurred in March 2025 and has had a lasting impact on the victims and their families.

During the hearing, one of the victims, a 15-year-old boy, shared how the accident altered his life and dreams of becoming a professional football player. He described the physical injuries he sustained, including severe damage to three fingers, which now limits his ability to play the sport he loves. The emotional toll and ongoing anxiety he experiences when passing the crash site were also highlighted.

The father of one of the boys recounted the chaotic scene immediately following the accident, where he rushed to help his son and another boy who were both critically injured. His emotional testimony painted a vivid picture of the trauma experienced by the families involved, emphasizing that this was not merely an accident but a choice made by Hazell to drive recklessly.

Hazell, who pleaded guilty to multiple charges, expressed remorse during the hearing, stating that his actions were careless and selfish. However, the prosecutor urged the court to impose a significant sentence to reflect the severity of the harm caused and to ensure community safety. The judge raised concerns about Hazell’s genuine remorse, given his lengthy criminal history.

As the case unfolds, Hazell is expected to be sentenced in late March 2026. The court proceedings have brought to light the devastating consequences of reckless driving under the influence of drugs, leaving families grappling with the aftermath of such tragic events.
