Women on a feminist history walking tour in Wollongong say they were disrupted and harassed by a group of teenage boys on e-bikes, leading to widespread condemnation from community leaders and advocates. According to ABC News, the incident occurred last weekend as nine women participated in the She Shapes History tour, which highlights unsung women in history.

Tour guide Lindsay Burlton reported that about 30 teenagers approached the group, following and encircling them while yelling and jeering. The unsettling experience lasted about 30 minutes, with the women feeling targeted due to the tour’s female-focused content. Although they did not perceive immediate danger, the situation was described as predatory.

Community response has been swift, with Wollongong MP Paul Scully and other local leaders expressing their outrage. Scully labeled the behavior as appalling and unacceptable, emphasizing the need for men in the community to support women and stand against such harassment. Local politicians, including Lord Mayor Tania Brown, announced plans to join the tour in solidarity this weekend.

The incident has sparked discussions about the role of e-bikes in facilitating antisocial behavior, with Brown noting that the anonymity provided by full-face helmets may embolden such actions. Advocates like Zoe Condliff and Michelle Glasgow highlighted the broader issue of women being targeted in public spaces, calling for increased education and community engagement to combat harassment.

Glasgow pointed out that harassment during public events has become alarmingly common, while Craig Morris from Healthier Illawarra Men stressed the importance of educating young boys about appropriate behavior. The community is now rallying to address these issues and promote a safer environment for women in public spaces.
