Arabic version: اعتقال أحد عشر شخصًا بعد حادثة نهب في أليس سبرينغز
Northern Territory Police have released CCTV footage showing a supermarket and service station allegedly being looted by rioters outside the Alice Springs Hospital following the arrest of Jefferson Lewis last week. The unrest erupted after Lewis, who has been charged with the murder of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, was taken into custody last week.
According to ABC News, the footage indicates that rioters caused over $200,000 in damage and losses to the businesses involved.
Detective Acting Superintendent Michael Ordelman reported that investigators are examining hundreds of hours of footage from the night of the unrest. He mentioned that two individuals have already surrendered to authorities, while five arrests were made yesterday and six more took place today.
NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole emphasized that the actions captured in the footage do not reflect traditional Indigenous practices or grief processing. Instead, he condemned the behavior as criminal and unacceptable, urging anyone who recognizes individuals in the footage to come forward or turn themselves in before police take further action.
Lewis, who was flown to Darwin for his own safety after his arrest, is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Tuesday. The community continues to grapple with the implications of the recent violence and the tragic death of Kumanjayi Little Baby.
