South Sudan’s Minister of Environment, Mabior Garang, has issued a firm appeal to oil companies operating across the nation to work in close partnership with the government to address ongoing pollution in key oil-producing regions. He emphasised that national development must never come at the expense of public health or environmental integrity, calling for stronger, more responsible production practices that safeguard both communities and ecosystems.
The minister’s remarks followed a comprehensive presentation by Nexus Group, a company specialising in environmental remediation, on strategies to manage and reduce oil-related pollution. Garang reiterated that the ministry’s goal is collaboration—not confrontation—with the petroleum sector.
“We need the revenue from oil just as much as we need a clean and healthy environment,” he said. “The Ministry of Environment is not an enemy of the national oil companies—we are on the same team.”
Oil-producing areas such as Unity State and Ruweng have long faced environmental pressures brought on by extraction activities. Pollution has raised serious concerns about community health, water quality, and the long-term viability of natural resources. Garang’s renewed stance signals a move toward a more integrated, solutions-driven approach that balances economic progress with environmental stewardship.
He stressed that environmental protection is essential not only for the immediate wellbeing of citizens but also for the nation’s long-term stability and development. To achieve this, he called for greater coordination between government agencies and oil operators to ensure responsible production, effective pollution management, and meaningful remediation where damage has occurred.
“We must stand together,” Garang urged, highlighting that cooperation among all stakeholders is crucial to safeguarding South Sudan’s environment. His message reinforces the importance of adopting sustainable methods that enable the country to benefit from its oil wealth without compromising the safety or future of its people.
This call for unity comes at a pivotal moment, as South Sudan seeks to expand its petroleum sector while addressing mounting environmental concerns. The Ministry of Environment’s proactive leadership aims to foster stronger partnerships with oil companies, encouraging investment in modern pollution-control technologies and deeper engagement with affected communities.
By promoting responsible oil production and environmental protection, South Sudan can pursue development that delivers economic gains while upholding the health and dignity of its citizens. Mabior Garang’s commitment to achieving this balance marks a significant step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for the nation.
