Arabic version: إريك دين، الممثل المحبوب، يتوفى عن عمر يناهز 53 عامًا بعد معركة مع مرض التصلب الجانبي الضموري
Eric Dane, known for his roles in hit television shows Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53. His representatives announced his passing on Thursday, following a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) less than a year ago. According to The Guardian, Dane spent his final days surrounded by family, including his wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
Dane first revealed his diagnosis in April 2023, sharing that he was determined to advocate for awareness and research related to ALS. In a statement, his family expressed gratitude for the support he received during his illness and requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.
The actor, who became widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, or “McSteamy,” in Grey’s Anatomy, initially joined the show for a single episode but became a series regular for six seasons. He also played Cal Jacobs in the HBO series Euphoria, where he filmed scenes in a wheelchair due to his declining health. Despite his challenges, Dane expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue working, stating his eagerness to return to the set of Euphoria shortly after his diagnosis.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a terminal degenerative disorder that affects motor neurons, leading to loss of mobility and eventually, respiratory failure. There is currently no cure, and the average life expectancy following diagnosis is approximately 27 months. However, some patients, like famed physicist Stephen Hawking, have lived for decades with the disease.
Eric Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two children, Billie and Georgia, who were at the center of his world. His legacy will continue through his impactful roles and advocacy for ALS awareness.
