Emma Beddington recently embarked on a unique experiment to break free from her routine by surrendering her day to chance. According to The Guardian, she was inspired by Max Hawkins, a software engineer who, feeling “trapped by his optimised life”, decided to randomise radically.
Beddington began her day with a less-than-ideal breakfast of a banana and nuts, selected by dice rolls. Despite her initial temptation to cheat, she committed to the experiment. Throughout the day, her choices were dictated by random outcomes, including her clothing and work environment, which involved working from the shed on a filthy old sofa.
By lunchtime, Beddington was left hungry and jittery from her caffeine choices. The dice dictated she eat eggs at home, but the unexpected reading material during lunch captivated her interest. After a vigorous high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class, which she found challenging, she ended her day with dinner at a new pizza and pasta place, enjoying crispy, golden, deep-fried artichokes and paper-thin Roman pizza.
Though her attempt at spontaneity was minor compared to Hawkins’s fully randomised life, Beddington found a sense of freedom from her usual preferences. She reflected on the lightness of accepting that she cannot control everything and appreciated the balance between predictability and spontaneity in life.
