Debra Docking and her two sisters, along with brother-in-law Len Wignall, have been picking up rubbish along a 43-kilometre stretch of Albany Highway every Friday for the past ten months, accumulating over five tonnes of litter. This effort culminated in a celebratory treat: a vanilla slice from a local bakery in Mount Barker. According to ABC News, the family faced a minor scare when they found only three slices left, but the bakery had reserved them and gifted them for free.

The initiative began with sister Rhonda Western, inspired by their mother, Jeannette Western, who instilled in them the values of environmental stewardship by picking up litter daily. The sisters have filled nearly 800 bags of trash, averaging about 6.8 kilograms each, along with various larger items like car parts and tires.

Despite the family’s dedication, they have encountered challenges, particularly with littering from uncovered trailers. Ms. Docking expressed frustration over the lack of government action to address the issue, stating that police do not prioritize such matters. Nonetheless, the family hopes to raise awareness about littering and encourage others to be responsible.

The community has shown support throughout their efforts, with many passing motorists tooting their horns in encouragement. Main Roads and the neighbouring shires of Albany and Plantagenet have assisted by collecting the filled bags, which has bolstered the family’s commitment to their cause. As the seasons change, Ms. Docking plans to continue monitoring the highway while her two sisters and brother-in-law head to Broome to continue their mission.
