Arabic version: عائلة تواجه الحزن مع تحديات الزهايمر لرغبات نهاية الحياة
Nia Pericles has watched her mum live with dementia for 16 years, raising profound questions about her own future. Moira was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 59, and now, at 76, her family struggles with her advanced condition.
According to SBS News, Nia recently discovered through DNA testing that she carries the ApoE4 gene, which increases her risk of developing Alzheimer’s. This revelation has added to her anxiety about the family history of the disease, which has already taken a toll on her mother.
Initially, the family did everything to preserve Moira’s life after her diagnosis, but as the years passed, their perspective shifted dramatically. Moira has expressed a desire to end her life before she loses the ability to recognize her loved ones, but Australian laws on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) do not support individuals with dementia.
Nia describes the emotional weight of visiting her mother, who is now nonverbal and lives in a locked memory support unit. The stark reality of her mother’s condition has left Nia feeling guilty and powerless, as she grapples with the inability to fulfill her mother’s end-of-life wishes.
The family now finds themselves hoping for an end to Moira’s suffering, reflecting on the sad reality of dementia and the limitations of current support systems. Nia remains committed to maintaining a positive outlook for herself while advocating for better understanding and options for families facing similar challenges.
