The family of Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian Nobel laureate, is expressing grave concerns for her health following a significant decline and a suspected heart attack. According to The Guardian, Mohammadi has lost almost 20 kg (44 lbs) and is experiencing persistent chest pain and loss of consciousness.

At 54 years old, Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while imprisoned, was previously released for health reasons in 2024. However, she was re-arrested in December 2025 during a memorial service for a fellow activist and is currently held in Zanjan central prison in north-west Iran. Her legal team is seeking a one-month medical suspension of her sentence due to her deteriorating condition.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation reported that her blood pressure has been dangerously fluctuating and is unresponsive to medication. Medical specialists have indicated that Mohammadi requires urgent specialized care, which cannot be provided in her current prison setting. Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, stated that keeping her in prison under such conditions is tantamount to a death sentence.

Mohammadi’s children have also voiced their concerns about her wellbeing. Her daughter, Kiana Rahmani, described her mother’s health as exhausted after more than a decade of imprisonment and hunger strikes. Her son, Ali, emphasized that Mohammadi is being punished for her activism, advocating for those who have suffered under the Iranian regime.

Despite the grim circumstances, Kiana remains hopeful for her mother’s release, urging the world to raise their voices for political prisoners in Iran. Mohammadi has faced numerous legal challenges, including a recent sentence of seven and a half years, adding to her already lengthy prison term. Her family continues to fight for her freedom and medical treatment, underscoring the urgent need for international attention to her plight.
