A shooting outside a popular beer garden in Austin, Texas, left two people dead and over a dozen injured, prompting the FBI to investigate the incident as potentially related to terrorism. Police responded to reports of a “male shooter” at Buford’s bar shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, where the suspected gunman was also found dead at the scene.

According to BBC News, fourteen individuals were transported to hospitals, with three in critical condition. The police have not released the identities of the victims or the suspect, nor have they confirmed a motive for the attack.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that the shooter initiated the violence by firing from a large SUV before exiting the vehicle with a rifle. Officers on patrol in the busy bar district quickly responded and engaged the suspect, who was shot at an intersection. Investigators noted that the SUV did not contain explosives, but there were indications suggesting a “nexus to terrorism”.

In a statement, Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and further details will be released in due course. Local officials, including Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, praised the rapid response of law enforcement, which took 57 seconds.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the attack, asserting that such violence will not define the state. The incident has drawn attention from national leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been informed about the situation. The University of Texas, located near the scene, expressed concern for the victims and their families, highlighting the community’s support during this tragic event.
