The RSPCA has expressed gratitude following the federal government’s decision to allocate $30 million for a new campus at Pialligo. This funding, announced in the recent federal budget, will replace the RSPCA’s more than 40-year-old facility at Weston. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson stated that this investment represents a significant opportunity for animal welfare in the region. According to ABC News, Robertson emphasized the importance of this funding for improving animal welfare services in the ACT.
In addition to the RSPCA funding, the federal budget includes $50 million to duplicate Drake Brockman Drive in West Belconnen, aimed at accommodating the area’s growing population. Other notable allocations include almost $10 million for the National Film and Sound Archive, $4 million for the Ngurra Cultural Precinct, and $3 million for the Museum of Australian Democracy to commemorate the centenary of Old Parliament House.
Robertson expressed her excitement about the new facility, highlighting that it would enable the RSPCA to enhance their services, including the establishment of a purpose-built veterinary clinic for high-volume desexing. The ACT government had previously committed $2 million to support the RSPCA’s efforts, which combined with the federal funding, will significantly advance their mission.
ACT Treasurer Chris Steel praised the budget, calling it a commitment to the city and its infrastructure needs. He noted that the budget reflects a decisive shift toward fairer treatment for Canberra, particularly in addressing housing supply issues through an additional $2 billion in the Housing Support Program.
However, independent Senator David Pocock offered a more critical perspective, describing the budget as a mixed bag. He acknowledged positive reforms in housing but expressed disappointment over the limited infrastructure investment, suggesting that Canberra’s needs were not adequately addressed in the federal budget’s allocations.
