FIFA has come under fire for a late policy change banning fans from bringing reusable water bottles into stadiums during the upcoming World Cup. This decision, made just days before the tournament starts on 11 June, has raised alarms among health experts who warn it could jeopardize fan safety.

According to BBC News, the ban prohibits not only water bottles but also cups, jars, and cans, with FIFA citing safety concerns related to potential missile-throwing by fans. The organization stated that it is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff.

Despite the ban, FIFA has assured that water will be available for purchase inside the stadiums at consistent prices. However, critics argue that the lack of access to personal hydration could lead to an increase in heat-related health incidents, especially given the high temperatures expected at many host venues.

Experts, including Professor Ollie Jay from the University of Sydney, have expressed concerns about the risks posed to spectators, who may be more vulnerable to heat stress than the athletes. Jay noted that many fans, including children and the elderly, have different levels of heat sensitivity, making them particularly susceptible to dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Dr. Theodore Keeping from Imperial College London emphasized that providing easy access to water is crucial for combating the extreme heat risks associated with climate change. The Free Lions England fans’ group criticized the policy change as a strange, late decision, highlighting that fans had previously been assured of their ability to bring water into the stadiums.

As the tournament approaches, the debate continues over FIFA’s responsibility to safeguard fans’ health in the face of rising temperatures and the challenges posed by climate change.
