Fitzroy Community School (FCS), an alternative primary school in inner Melbourne, is under investigation for allegations of physical harm and historical sexual assault. Founded in 1976 by Philip O’Carroll and Faye Berryman, FCS has grown into a two-campus institution that serves about 100 students. While some former students praise the school’s nurturing environment, others report instances of excessive physical discipline that crossed into violence. Allegations of sexual and physical assaults involving staff members are currently being investigated, with police interviewing several individuals in connection to events that occurred between 2009 and 2012.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is also scrutinizing the school for potential risks to student safety. As part of this investigation, Nick Berryman, a teacher and son of the founders, has been suspended, while Tim Berryman, the principal, is on leave. The school’s founders have historically resisted external oversight, claiming their model offers a better alternative to mainstream education, which they criticize as overly restrictive.

Former parents have recounted experiences of feeling pressured to either trust the school’s methods or withdraw their children. Some have expressed regret over their decisions to remain, citing a culture of fear and harm disguised as discipline. The school board has issued a statement apologizing to those who felt unsupported, acknowledging past failures in addressing concerns.

As the investigations continue, the future of Fitzroy Community School remains uncertain, with former students and parents calling for accountability and reform within its governance structure.
