NSW Labor has called on the NSW Government to provide financial support in next week’s Budget to apartment buildings residents and owners to remove dangerous, flammable cladding.

Tuesday 14 June 2022 marked the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy that claimed 72 lives. Yet not a single piece of dangerous, flammable cladding has been removed under Project Remediate, the NSW Government’s signature program to remove it.

At the same time, the Victorian Government has removed dangerous, flammable cladding from 154 apartment buildings, with work underway on a further 51 buildings.

Project Remediate, the NSW Governments program to remove cladding from residential apartment buildings requires the apartment building to opt-in to use the Government approved contractor. Apartment buildings are then given an interest-free loan to cover the cost of the removal of dangerous, flammable cladding.

This building crisis isn’t just confined to Sydney CBD: dangerous, flammable cladding is on apartment buildings in Miranda, Parramatta and all the way up to Newcastle.

Shadow Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, Courtney Houssos MLC said:

“Apartment owners and residents have waited for the NSW Government to take action for five years.

“NSW Labor is calling on the NSW Government to provide apartment owners and residents financial assistance in next week’s budget to remove flammable cladding.

“As Victoria began removing dangerous flammable cladding, Minister Kean and Minister Anderson sat idly by, hoping the issue would go away and now Minister Petinos does the same.

“The NSW Government’s failure to remediate any apartment building in the past five years is irresponsible and negligent.”
