Alex Manninger, the former Arsenal goalkeeper, has tragically died in a traffic accident at the age of 48. This news was confirmed by his first club, Red Bull Salzburg, which announced his passing on its official social media account.
According to The Guardian, Manninger was capped 33 times by the Austrian national team and had a notable career in football. He joined Arsenal in June 1997 for £500,000 from Grazer AK and made 64 appearances under manager Arsène Wenger, winning the Premier League during his five-year stay with the club.
Manninger also played for several clubs in Italy, including Torino, Bologna, Siena, and Juventus, as well as Augsburg in Germany and a brief stint at Liverpool in the English Premier League. His contributions to football were acknowledged by the Austrian Football Association, which described him as an “outstanding” ambassador for Austrian football.
Peter Schottel, the sporting director of the Austrian Football Association, expressed condolences and highlighted Manninger’s professionalism and reliability as key attributes that made him a respected figure in football. He emphasized that Manninger’s achievements deserve the highest respect and will remain unforgotten, and his thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time.
