Arabic version: استهداف وزير الخارجية الإيراني السابق في غارة جوية على منزله
Kamal Kharazi, Iran’s former foreign minister, has been seriously wounded in an apparent assassination attempt that also resulted in the death of his wife. This attack occurred as ongoing airstrikes by the United States and Israel continue to pound Iran for a fifth week. According to Al Jazeera, Kharazi was hospitalized with serious injuries following an airstrike on his home in Tehran.
Reports indicate that Iranian media, including Shargh, Etemad, and Ham Mihan, covered the incident extensively. Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Tehran, stated, “We have seen what looks like an assassination attempt against the former foreign minister, Kamal Kharazi. He has been gravely wounded, and his wife was killed.”
The airstrikes on Thursday affected multiple cities in Iran, including Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz, resulting in at least four deaths in Larestan. The spokesperson for the armed forces’ unified command asserted that Iran will continue its military operations until the US and Israel face “permanent regret and surrender.”
Ebrahim Zolfaghari, the spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya central headquarters, emphasized that US and Israeli assessments of Iran’s military capabilities were “incomplete” and warned of more extensive and destructive actions against adversaries. These comments followed US President Donald Trump’s declaration that Washington would respond to Iran “extremely hard” in the coming weeks.
Since the initiation of joint airstrikes by the US and Israel on February 28, over 1,340 people have reportedly died in Iran. The conflict has also resulted in casualties in Israel and among US soldiers in the region. Kharazi, known for his previous diplomatic roles, had recently indicated that Iran had not entirely closed the door on negotiations, despite expressing skepticism about US intentions. His assassination attempt raises concerns about further retaliatory actions by Iran against perceived threats from American interests in the region.
