Gary Raymond Sykes, a former principal from Tasmania, is facing a prison term after pleading guilty to child sex abuse. According to ABC News, the 70-year-old was remanded in custody following a hearing in the Supreme Court in Launceston.

Sykes’s guilty plea was entered in February 2026 for persistent sexual abuse of a child, which took place on Flinders Island between December 2019 and December 2020. The court was informed that Sykes, who retired as principal of Flinders Island District High School in 2014, had periodically worked as a relief teacher before his employment with the Tasmanian Education Department ended.

Crown prosecutor Emily Judd highlighted Sykes’s familiarity with the victim’s family and his understanding of her vulnerability. The abuse primarily occurred in Sykes’s car and at his home. During the proceedings, a statement from the victim was read, expressing the lasting impact of Sykes’s actions on her mental and physical health.

Defense barrister James Oxley noted that Sykes expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the wrongness of his conduct. However, Justice Robert Pearce made it clear that a prison term was “inevitable”. Sykes will be sentenced in July 2026.
