Arabic version: معلم سابق يتلقى حكمًا بالسجن بسبب الاعتداء على طالب
Darroch Robinson, a former history teacher at Darwin Middle School, has been sentenced to four years’ jail for striking a female student in the face, causing her to fall and break her teeth. The Northern Territory Supreme Court found Robinson guilty of unlawfully causing serious harm during a classroom incident that occurred in March 2024. He will serve three months in prison before his sentence is suspended.
According to ABC News, the court heard that Robinson had confiscated the student’s phone, leading to a verbal altercation where she insulted him. During sentencing, Chief Justice Michael Grant acknowledged that Robinson faced provocation but emphasized that this did not justify his actions.
The incident resulted in the student suffering two fractured teeth, which have caused her ongoing pain and required dental intervention. Chief Justice Grant noted that Robinson’s conduct represented a severe breach of trust, stating that no level of verbal abuse or taunt could justify his behavior.
Robinson’s defense attorney highlighted his client’s contributions to the community and military service, arguing for leniency in sentencing. The court recognized Robinson’s previously unblemished character and potential for rehabilitation, ultimately deciding to suspend the majority of his sentence after three months.
