Ghanaian Australians are eagerly preparing for the Black Stars’ first match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place against Panama at 9am AEST on Thursday. According to SBS News, the excitement is palpable, with fans ready to summon vibrant energy to support their team.
Yaw Derkyi, the organizing secretary of the Ghana Association of NSW, has invited everyone in Australia to join the celebration. He emphasized the spirited atmosphere expected during the match, stating, “You have to prepare yourself. We’re gonna chant, like a call and response … it’s a spirit chant; it gives the vibes, it moves the whole.”
Despite concerns over the team’s recent performance, with Ghana ranked 73rd in FIFA standings, the community remains optimistic. Derkyi expressed confidence in the team’s potential to “shock the world” this year, aiming for a successful tournament after failing to qualify for the previous Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars have enlisted veteran coach Carlos Queiroz to help guide them to the knockout stage for the first time since 2010. However, the team will face challenges, including the absence of star player Mohammed Kudus due to injury and midfielder Thomas Partey, whose visa application to enter Canada was refused.
For those looking to join the festivities, Derkyi mentioned ALEX&Co. Restaurant & Bar in Parramatta as a prime location to experience the match-day excitement. He plans to bring drums and other elements to enhance the celebratory atmosphere, reinforcing the strong sense of community among Ghanaian Australians as they rally behind their team.
