Jake Lyle, a 22-year-old from Gladstone, is set to make his dream debut as the phantom in the iconic musical Phantom of the Opera, which kicks off tonight on Sydney Harbour. The production commemorates the 40th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated show, which has captivated audiences worldwide.
According to ABC News, Lyle’s passion for the musical began at age 14 when he watched a DVD of the 25th anniversary performance. Inspired by the haunting story of the masked man beneath the Paris Opera House, Lyle decided he had to be part of the show.
Lyle expressed disbelief when he received the call from his agent informing him that he had landed the lead role. “I thought I’d bombed the final audition. It’s mind-boggling,” he remarked. The musical tells the story of a mysterious phantom who falls in love with a young singer and employs every devious method to nurture her talents.
The performances will take place in a unique outdoor opera theatre, providing a stunning backdrop for the show. Lyle’s former music teacher, Chelsea Elvery, praised his dedication and eagerness to learn, noting that many from Gladstone, including former classmates, are traveling to Sydney to support him.
Lyle expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his hometown, stating, “It’s absolutely heartwarming and reminds me that I’m so privileged and lucky to be from such a strong community that will back me.” The show runs until May 3, promising to deliver an unforgettable experience for both Lyle and the audience.
