Hady Habib’s journey to becoming a trailblazer for Lebanon in tennis has been nothing short of extraordinary. From leaving his home country at just 11 to train in Houston, to earning a scholarship at Texas A&M, and battling it out on international tours, his story is one of grit, determination, and triumph. Now, he’s etched his name in history as the first man representing Lebanon in a Grand Slam tournament. After a hard-fought victory against China’s Yunchaokete Bu, Habib has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open, delivering an inspiring performance that has lit up the hearts of fans back home and beyond.
The road to Melbourne wasn’t without its challenges. Just weeks before this monumental event, Habib faced a tough defeat against Damir Dzumhur in the Round of 32 at the Canberra Challenger tournament. But he bounced back with resilience, proving that setbacks are just setups for comebacks.
The first-round match against Bu was a nail-biter. The 26-year-old Habib held his nerve in a tense seven-point tiebreak to clinch the opening set. In the second, he powered through to a 6-4 win. As both players brought their A-game, the third set again boiled down to a gripping seven-point tiebreak. Habib’s unwavering focus and calm demeanour overcame Bu’s aggressive playstyle, sealing his spot in the next round.
For Lebanon, a country grappling with conflict and adversity, Habib’s victory was a beacon of hope. “It’s a huge win, especially with what we’ve been going through as a country,” Habib said. “I think to bring something positive, especially [when] we’ve been having a rough time with obviously the war. We had our other issues in the past. It’s just nice to get this win for Lebanon and for the people.”
The electric atmosphere at Melbourne Park only amplified the magnitude of the moment. Fans on both sides cheered passionately, turning the match into a spectacular display of energy and emotion. “As you guys could see there, the crowd was absolutely wild. It made it even more special to win in front of them,” Habib shared, reflecting on the unforgettable experience.
Up next, Habib faces a formidable challenge in world number 20, Ugo Humbert. The highly anticipated match, set for Wednesday, January 15 or Thursday, January 16 (refer to the Australian Open website for more accurate timing), will be a true test of Habib’s skill and composure as he aims to secure a spot in the third round.
