Great Britain is represented by 25 athletes at the Winter Paralympics in Cortina, including a standout member of the team, an eight-year-old black labrador retriever named Pickle. According to BBC News, Pickle is the guide dog of Hester Poole, who is competing in the visually impaired Para-alpine skiing events.
Pickle has become a beloved figure at the Paralympics, known for her cheerful demeanor. Poole, who has had severely limited vision since birth, expressed her appreciation for Pickle, stating that the dog helps her feel more confident and live independently. “When she comes skiing, it’s nice to get to the bottom of the piste, win or lose, and have this furry ball of love waiting for me,” Poole said.
The pair began working together while being filmed for the Channel 5 series Puppy School for Guide Dogs. Poole, now 18 years old, is set to compete in her first Winter Paralympics, with events scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.
Pickle has already made her mark, appearing in her own official team headshot and receiving canine-adapted kit in Cortina. While the athletes adhere to strict nutritional regimes, Pickle enjoys a more relaxed diet, often scavenging for snacks on the ground. There have been questions regarding her eligibility, as she holds a German pet passport.
At the Milan-Cortina Games, six guide dogs are accompanying athletes, with dedicated areas for them at competition and ceremony venues. As Poole competes on the slopes with her human guide Ali Hall, Pickle will be waiting at the bottom with Poole’s mother, ready for attention and affection, regardless of the competition’s outcome.
