The Green Party has won the Gorton and Denton by-election, with candidate Hannah Spencer taking the seat from Labour in the Greens’ first ever Westminster by-election victory. Labour, which took the Greater Manchester seat with more than 50% of the vote in 2024, was pushed into third place behind Reform UK.

According to BBC News, Spencer celebrated her victory with a majority of more than 4,000 votes, receiving nearly 41% of the total votes cast. This by-election was triggered by the resignation of former Labour health minister Andrew Gwynne, who lost the Labour whip for offensive WhatsApp messages a year ago. The result signifies the sixth largest Labour majority to be overturned at a by-election since World War Two.

In her acceptance speech, Spencer, who is also a local councillor and leader of the Green Party group on Trafford Council, expressed her commitment to her constituents, stating that earning their trust starts now. She emphasized the need to advocate for those who feel left behind, promising to represent diverse communities within the constituency.

The outcome has raised questions about Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership, as the party’s loss to a smaller party with limited MPs could intensify scrutiny ahead of upcoming elections in May. Labour’s deputy leader Lucy Powell acknowledged the need for the party to adapt its approach.

Reform UK’s candidate Matt Goodwin claimed his party’s performance embarrassed Labour in one of its strongest seats, while Green Party leader Zack Polanski highlighted the significance of their win, asserting that it indicates the party’s expanding influence. Meanwhile, concerns were raised about potential irregularities in the voting process, with an election observer group noting instances of family voting in a majority of polling stations observed.

As the political landscape shifts, the Green Party’s victory signals a potential change in voter sentiment, challenging the traditional dominance of Labour in the region.
