Hamas’s armed wing has firmly rejected calls for disarmament, labeling such demands as an attempt to perpetuate Israel’s genocide against Palestinians. According to Al Jazeera, spokesman Abu Obeida stated that discussing disarmament before Israel fully implements the first phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire is unacceptable.

In a televised address on April 5, 2026, Obeida criticized the crude manner in which disarmament is being raised, asserting that it is a significant barrier in negotiations surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza. This plan aims to address the ongoing conflict in the region.

Since the ceasefire began in October 2023, over 705 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in Israeli attacks, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Hamas has communicated to mediators that it will not consider disarmament without assurances of a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Obeida emphasized that the demands for disarmament are a dangerous tactic employed by Israel against Palestinian resistance. He insisted that discussions about the second phase of the Trump plan should only occur after Israel fulfills its commitments under the first phase.

The statement from Hamas comes amidst escalating violence in the region, including a significant Israeli military offensive in Lebanon and ongoing conflict with Iran. Obeida condemned Israel’s actions in both contexts, highlighting the humanitarian toll and urging Palestinians to fight for their rights.
