Arabic version: فندق إيميو التاريخي يواجه الهدم من أجل تطوير منتجع جديد
Plans to redevelop the establishment have worried some locals about the potential loss of character and history. If approved, the application would lead to the demolition of the historic pub, which has been a social hub since its establishment in 1880. According to ABC News, the owners plan to replace it with a resort-style project featuring a 53-room hotel, a bar, a restaurant, and 133 residential units across three levels.
The development application, submitted by Jewell Planning Consultants on behalf of the current owners, outlines a modern-style hotel design and extensive cliff-side construction. The project would also create 166 car parking spaces while maintaining the heritage-listed Mango Avenue as the main access point. Mackay Regional Council’s planning department will assess the application, which is currently in its early stages and does not require public consultation.
The Eimeo Hotel, perched on a headland with sweeping views of the Whitsundays, has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Local historian Doug Petersen noted that the site has hosted various events over the decades, making it a cherished part of the community. Despite the proposal, hotel manager Llewellyn Stayte assured patrons that the venue would continue to operate for the next 24 months while the application is assessed.
Reactions to the redevelopment plans have been mixed. Some locals express hope that the pub will remain a part of the community, while others worry about increased traffic and congestion in the area. Petersen emphasized the importance of preserving the unique character of the site, suggesting that while change is inevitable, the community should cherish the Eimeo Hotel while it lasts.
