Journalist Ashraf Helmy called on sports officials in Egypt, especially the Egyptian Football Association, not to assume responsibility for the deliberate mistakes committed by Hossam Hassan, the head coach of the national team, during his participation in World Cup matches. His appeal came after the FA received a letter from FIFA accusing Hossam Hassan of violating five provisions of FIFA regulations related to misconduct and breaches of fair play principles: failing to play with loyalty and integrity, exploiting a sporting event to promote other matters, acting in ways that damage the reputation of football and FIFA, and behaving inappropriately.
Helmy said Hossam Hassan must bear full responsibility alone, following provocative statements that mixed sports and politics and antagonized FIFA. In those remarks Hossam insisted on his position regarding the Palestinian issue, saying: “It is an honor for FIFA to punish me for supporting and standing with the brothers in Gaza; this is the greatest medal and heroism in my life.”
Helmy added that Hossam Hassan — “who is supposed to be an ambassador for Egypt” — acted individually in ways that contradict the ethics true Egyptians, the sons of the Pharaohs, are raised with. Incidents such as spitting at Argentine fans after the Egypt–Argentina match have harmed Egypt’s reputation across the international sporting community. Helmy considered the Egyptian FA’s support for Hossam in this case to be implicit approval of his mistakes, especially after he stood by his actions despite FIFA’s letter. He warned that defending such unacceptable behavior encourages coaches and players to commit larger offenses in future international competitions, which could lead to suspensions and bans preventing Egyptian teams from taking part in international events.
