The US House of Representatives passed a measure that seeks to halt President Donald Trump from taking further military action in Iran, with a vote tally of 215-208. This decision reflects bipartisan discontent with the ongoing conflict, which began in February. Four Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the measure, marking a rare instance of cross-party collaboration against the war. According to BBC News, this is the fourth attempt by the House to rein in Trump’s war powers, which critics argue lack congressional approval.

The House resolution still needs approval from the Republican-controlled US Senate. Even if it were successful in the Senate, the measure is unlikely to fully curb military action against Iran, especially since Trump holds the power to veto it. A previous similar resolution advanced in the Senate in May but has not yet undergone a full floor vote. Republican representatives Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson stood alongside Democrats to pass the resolution, with Barrett stating, “Congress alone declares war, that’s something certainly we need to be protective of.”

This vote signifies a growing division within Trump’s Republican Party, especially following recent internal disputes that led to the withdrawal of a significant funding initiative by the Trump administration. Representative Gregory Meeks, a leading Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs committee, characterized the vote as a notable bipartisan rebuke of Trump’s military strategy in Iran. He argued that the war has not achieved its objectives and has complicated diplomatic efforts regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

Despite a ceasefire agreement, tensions remain high, with recent US strikes on Iran and retaliatory actions from Tehran targeting Kuwait. Prior to the vote, Trump maintained that negotiations to end the conflict were progressing well and hinted at a potential resolution in the near future. He asserted that his administration aims to conclude the conflict without further escalation, stating that they are close to achieving a diplomatic agreement with Iran.
