Arabic version: تحقيق يكشف عن فشل العدالة في قضية الطعن في نوتنغهام
A recent public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks has exposed what the mother of one of the victims describes as a “catastrophic collapse of responsibility” and an “undoubted miscarriage of justice.” Valdo Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020, was responsible for the stabbings that killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates on the morning of June 13, 2023.
The inquiry, which lasted 14 weeks and concluded on Friday, scrutinized the events leading up to the attacks and the subsequent response from authorities. Emma Webber, Barnaby’s mother, expressed her deep concerns during a press conference in London, stating, “This wasn’t bad luck. It was a catastrophic collapse of responsibility. An undoubted miscarriage of justice that must now be addressed.” According to BBC News, she highlighted a perceived cover-up regarding the handling of the case.
The bereaved families of the victims are now calling for significant changes to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future. The inquiry revealed alarming details about the failures of mental health services and law enforcement, including a lack of adequate staffing and oversight.
As the inquiry came to a close, it became evident that there were numerous missed opportunities to prevent the attacks, raising serious questions about the accountability of the systems in place to protect the public. The families of the victims continue to seek justice and reform to address these systemic issues.
