Iran’s football federation announced that the men’s national team will participate in the 2026 World Cup, which begins in June, but with specific demands from the tournament’s joint hosts, the United States, Mexico, and Canada. According to Al Jazeera, the federation’s call for conditions follows the refusal of Canada to grant entry to its chief last month due to alleged ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This group was designated as a terrorist group in 2024.

The Iranian federation stated that their participation hinges on the hosts addressing their concerns, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran. They emphasized that they would attend the tournament without compromising their beliefs or cultural values.

FFIRI President Mehdi Taj outlined ten conditions for their participation, which include the assurance of visas for the delegation, respect for the national team’s flag and anthem, and heightened security measures at airports and hotels. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Iranian players would be welcome but noted potential entry restrictions for those linked to the IRGC.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino assured that Iran will play its scheduled matches in the US. The Iranian team is set to be based in Tucson, Arizona, and will compete against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Group G, opening their campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. The Iranian federation asserted that no external power can deprive Iran of its participation in a cup to which it has qualified with merit.
