Arabic version: إيران تسقط طائرة F-15 أمريكية، والبحث عن الطيار جارٍ
Iran has reportedly shot down a US F-15 jet, igniting headlines and raising concerns over the fate of the pilot. According to BBC News, images from the crash site have emerged, including one from Iranian media purporting to show an empty ejector seat. A second plane is believed to have crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying the situation.
The Daily Mail reports a “race to find pilot” following the incident. One crew member was rescued by US special forces “within hours” in a “daring” mission, while the second remains missing. The Daily Mail describes the image of the ejector seat as a significant propaganda boost for Iran.
The Guardian notes that aviation experts have identified the wreckage as belonging to a US air force squadron typically based at RAF Lakenheath in the UK. Additionally, an Iranian businessman has offered a reward of $60,000 (£40,000) for anyone who can capture the missing crew member alive.
The downing of the jet marks the first loss of a US aircraft in Iran since the onset of the current conflict, as highlighted by the Independent. US President Donald Trump has expressed hope that the pilot is unharmed, amidst calls for a defense budget increase to $1.5 trillion (£1.1 trillion).
In a related note, the Daily Telegraph reported that one of the helicopters involved in the rescue mission was seen trailing smoke upon its return to Iraqi territory but managed to land safely.
