Arabic version: إيران تواجه أزمة قيادة بعد وفاة مسؤول رئيسي
The death of Ali Larijani, Iran’s influential security chief, has intensified the leadership crisis within the Islamic Republic. According to BBC News, Larijani was a pivotal figure in shaping Iran’s strategic decisions, particularly in matters of national security and diplomacy.
Larijani, who held the position of secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, was instrumental in managing Iran’s confrontations with the United States and Israel. His death follows the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28 and comes during a campaign targeting senior Iranian officials and commanders, indicating a systematic effort to undermine Iran’s leadership during wartime.
At the time of his death, Larijani was grappling with multiple crises, including the ongoing war, domestic unrest, and stalled negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. His removal leaves these critical issues unresolved, placing them in the hands of an unknown successor who will face an increasingly fragile situation.
The current leadership dynamics may shift power further towards military factions, as recent remarks by President Masoud Pezeshkian suggest that armed forces units have been granted broader authority in the absence of senior leadership. This could lead to quicker decision-making but with diminished coordination.
In the immediate aftermath, a more volatile situation is anticipated, characterized by a tougher military stance and increased domestic repression. The Iranian army chief has warned of a “decisive” retaliation for Larijani’s death, raising concerns about the future stability of the Iranian state as it continues to lose senior figures amidst ongoing conflicts.
