Arabic version: رحلة إيران في كأس العالم تنتهي بقلوب محطمة بعد دراما في اللحظات الأخيرة
Iran’s hopes of advancing in the World Cup 2026 were dashed in a dramatic fashion, leaving the team and its supporters heartbroken. Despite remaining unbeaten in the group stage, they missed out on a place in the knockout rounds due to goal difference.
According to BBC News, Iran faced unprecedented challenges even before the tournament began, with significant obstacles affecting their preparation. In their final group match against Egypt, Iran needed a win to secure advancement. After a tense game that ended in a 1-1 draw, a last-minute goal by Shoja Khalilzadeh was ruled out for offside, a decision that would haunt the team.
The drama continued as Iran awaited the outcome of the Algeria versus Austria match, knowing that a draw would eliminate them. In a nail-biting finish, Algeria took the lead only for Austria to equalize in the dying seconds, sealing Iran’s fate. Senegal’s superior goal difference ultimately allowed them to claim the last spot for third-placed teams.
Iran’s coach, Amir Ghalenoei, expressed his disappointment, stating that his team was “robbed” of preparation time due to travel restrictions imposed by the host country. He emphasized the unfair treatment faced by his players and called for FIFA to ensure better conditions for teams in future tournaments. Despite the challenges, Ghalenoei praised his players for their resilience and performance throughout the tournament.
