Arabic version: إسرائيل تشن غارات جوية في بيروت بعد الهدنة التي توسطت فيها الولايات المتحدة
According to BBC News,
Israel has hit southern Beirut in the first attack on the Lebanese capital since a truce brokered by the US last week. Two air strikes on two apartment buildings in a stronghold of Iran-backed Hezbollah killed two people and injured at least 17, Lebanon’s state news agency said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes aimed at “terrorist headquarters in the Dahieh district of Beirut” in response to Hezbollah’s firing at Israeli territory. While Hezbollah has not officially commented on the incident, the Israeli military reported intercepting two projectiles launched from Lebanon.
The attack has raised concerns, as Israel had previously limited its operations in Beirut under pressure from the United States, which is wary that further strikes could undermine ongoing peace negotiations with Iran. A spokesperson for the Iranian parliament warned of a “decisive and painful response” to the Israeli actions.
The strikes occurred despite a ceasefire that has been in effect since April 17, although violations have been frequent. This incident is the third strike on Beirut since the ceasefire began, with previous attacks targeting Hezbollah commanders. Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has criticized the US-brokered agreement, labeling it a “trap” for not addressing Israeli occupation in southern Lebanon.
