Arabic version: غارة جوية إسرائيلية تقتل عقيد شرطة غزة والعنف مستمر
A senior officer in Gaza’s Interior Ministry was killed in an Israeli air strike, according to Palestinian medics and Hamas sources. The medics reported that Naseem al-Kalazani, a colonel in the police force, died in a targeted strike on his vehicle near the al-Mawasi area in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on May 6, 2026. The attack also wounded at least 17 other individuals.
Al-Kalazani led the anti-narcotics force in Khan Younis, as confirmed by sources from Hamas. In addition to this incident, Israel intensified its military operations, resulting in the deaths of at least three more Palestinians near the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, bringing the day’s total fatalities to at least four.
There was no immediate response from Israeli officials regarding the strikes. Violence in Gaza has continued despite a United States-brokered ceasefire that began in October, with Israel conducting nearly daily attacks on Palestinian targets. According to local medics, at least 830 Palestinians have been killed during this ceasefire, while Israel claims that Hamas has killed four of its soldiers during the same period.
Israel maintains that its strikes are aimed at preventing attacks from Hamas and other armed groups. The Israeli security cabinet recently convened to discuss the possibility of renewing military operations, following increased pressure from the military after Hamas’s refusal to comply with demands for full disarmament. Hamas, on the other hand, has proposed that any discussions about its weapons should be part of a broader framework leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with reports indicating a deterioration despite a slight increase in aid entering the region since the reopening of the Zikim crossing. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has noted that conditions are still worsening for the population, with more than 72,500 Palestinians reported killed since the onset of the conflict in October 2023. According to Al Jazeera, the ongoing violence continues to raise significant concerns about the safety and well-being of civilians in the area.
