Arabic version: تقدم القوات الإسرائيلية نحو مدينة رئيسية في جنوب لبنان

Israeli military forces have crossed the Litani River in southern Lebanon, marking their first advance beyond this boundary since 2006. They are now positioned on the outskirts of Nabatieh, a significant city known for its cultural and economic importance. According to Al Jazeera, this move could represent a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict that reignited in October 2023.

Nabatieh is viewed as a symbol of resistance by many Lebanese, given its historical significance during past Israeli confrontations. The potential capture of the city could have far-reaching implications for the region. Israeli forces are reportedly intensifying their air campaign and preparing for a possible assault on Nabatieh, breaking through multiple defensive lines established by Hezbollah.

Lebanese military sources reported that two soldiers were seriously wounded due to an attack by an Israeli drone near the city. In retaliation, Hezbollah has launched rockets at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona and engaged Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, further escalating the conflict.

As Israel expands its military operations, it has issued evacuation orders for at least 10 villages in southern Lebanon. The Israeli army warned residents that staying could lead to fatal consequences. This directive comes as both countries engage in peace talks to establish a permanent resolution to the hostilities.

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with over 1.2 million people displaced by the ongoing violence. Many families are living in makeshift conditions, with limited options for shelter. The recent displacement orders challenge the fragile ceasefire established in mid-April, which has been frequently violated. Negotiations between Lebanese and Israeli officials are ongoing, with hopes for a new round of discussions in Washington next week.
