An Israeli soldier’s actions, captured in an image of him vandalizing a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon, have led to widespread condemnation. According to BBC News, the incident has drawn reactions from Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed being “stunned and saddened” by the act.

The statue, located on a crucifix outside a family home in Debel, a village where residents have remained during Israel’s war with Hezbollah, has become a symbol of the local Christian community’s distress. Father Fadi Flaifel, the head of Debel’s congregation, condemned the vandalism, stating it violates human rights and reflects a lack of civility. He noted that similar desecrations have occurred previously.

The Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of the circulating image and stated that it views the soldier’s conduct with “great severity.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) indicated that appropriate measures would be taken against those involved and expressed a commitment to working with the Christian community to restore the statue.

The incident has also drawn criticism from the US, with Ambassador Mike Huckabee calling for “swift, severe, & public consequences.” Right-wing commentators in the US have denounced the act, highlighting a growing discontent with Israel among some American citizens, as recent polls show a decline in support for the nation.

This event comes on the heels of a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which has paused six weeks of fighting. However, tensions remain high, and the situation continues to evolve as both sides accuse each other of violations.
