Italian government officials have strongly opposed suggestions that their national football team could take the place of Iran at the upcoming World Cup 2026. This speculation arose following concerns about Iran’s participation due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel, which began on February 28.

According to Al Jazeera, Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated that it would not be appropriate for Italy to compete unless they qualified on the pitch. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti echoed this sentiment, labeling the idea as “shameful.”

The proposal initially surfaced through Paolo Zampolli, an Italian-American envoy, who suggested that Italy should replace Iran, who has qualified for the tournament but faces uncertainty regarding their matches being held in the U.S. Italian officials and fans have expressed embarrassment over the suggestion, reinforcing that qualification should be earned through performance.

Luciano Buonfiglio, President of the Italian Olympic Committee, stated that he found the idea offensive and unlikely, emphasizing that teams must earn their place in international competitions. Italian coach Gianni De Biasi also dismissed the proposal, arguing that any potential absence of Iran should logically be filled by the next qualifying team.

FIFA has maintained that Iran will participate in the World Cup, with President Gianni Infantino previously confirming their involvement. As preparations continue, Iranian officials assert that they are ready for the tournament, scheduled to begin on June 11, with Iran’s first match set against New Zealand in Los Angeles four days later.
