Jacob Bridgeman won the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, finishing one shot ahead of Rory McIlroy. Bridgeman secured his first PGA Tour title with a final score of 18 under par, despite a one-over-par 72 in the final round. McIlroy, who shot a four-under-par 67, ended the tournament tied for second at 17 under, alongside Kurt Kitayama.
Bridgeman started the final day with a seven-shot lead but faced challenges as he made three bogies. McIlroy, beginning the day six shots back, made a strong push with five birdies, including an impressive hole-out from a greenside bunker on the 12th. A tense finish saw Bridgeman struggle on the 18th hole, leaving his putt short, but he held his nerve to secure victory.
This win marks a significant milestone for Bridgeman, who is the first man to win the Genesis Invitational in his tournament debut since 1975. His performance this year has been strong, with two top-10 finishes in his first four events, including an eighth-place finish at Pebble Beach last week.
McIlroy expressed mixed feelings about his performance, noting missed opportunities but also recognizing improvements in his game compared to the previous week. He finished with only three bogeys throughout the tournament, showcasing a more consistent performance.
The tournament, hosted by 15-time major winner Tiger Woods, featured several notable performances, including Tommy Fleetwood’s joint-seventh finish and Scottie Scheffler’s recovery to joint twelfth after a rocky start. Bridgeman’s victory moves him inside the top 25 of the world rankings for the first time.
According to BBC News, Bridgeman’s emotional win capped off a thrilling week at the Riviera Country Club, highlighting the competitive nature of the PGA Tour.
