Federal Labor member Josh Burns has testified at the royal commission into antisemitism, detailing the profound impact of online hate on his personal and professional life. According to The Guardian, Burns expressed guilt regarding the misogyny faced by his partner, Victorian Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell, who has endured additional layers of abuse due to her gender.
Burns recounted that his office was vandalized and that he has received more than 10,000 abusive social media messages, highlighting the severe toll that antisemitism can take on individuals and their families. He emphasized the need for better protections under the Online Safety Act, suggesting that social media platforms have the capability to enhance safety measures.
During the inquiry, Burns shared a disturbing example of the kind of abuse Purcell has faced, which included violent and sexualized comments. He indicated that this dual layer of discrimination complicates their experiences and amplifies the emotional burden they carry.
The commission’s hearings, which began on Monday, aim to address the growing concerns surrounding antisemitism and social cohesion in Australia. Burns’ testimony is part of a broader effort to understand and combat the online hate that has increasingly affected public figures and their families.
