Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership has never looked more vulnerable as growing numbers of his own MPs call on him to stand down after a disastrous set of election results. The prime minister has vowed to fight on, even suggesting he could serve two terms, but the choice could very soon be taken out of his hands.

According to BBC News, Labour backbencher Catherine West has unexpectedly announced her willingness to challenge Starmer for the leadership. Although she has not been a prominent figure within the party, her previous role as a junior minister under Starmer adds a layer of complexity to her challenge. To initiate a leadership contest, she must secure the backing of 81 MPs, which may prove difficult despite the growing dissent against Starmer.

As the situation develops, more than 30 Labour MPs have called for Starmer to go, but not all are likely to support West’s bid. Some may feel that now is not the right time for a contest, while others await the outcome of West’s initial support. If she garners sufficient backing, it could prompt other potential challengers, such as Wes Streeting or Angela Rayner, to consider their own ambitions for leadership.

If West’s challenge fails to gain traction, it may inadvertently strengthen Starmer’s position, allowing him to claim party support. However, the possibility of cabinet resignations remains a significant factor, as history has shown that such moves can precede a leader’s ousting.

In the coming days, Starmer is expected to deliver a crucial speech aimed at reassuring Labour MPs and the public of his capability to address the party’s challenges. The outcome of this speech could be pivotal in determining whether Labour MPs will rally behind him or continue to seek alternatives for leadership. Meanwhile, the party’s upcoming legislative agenda will also play a critical role in shaping the political dynamics within Labour as it navigates this turbulent period.
