Pressure is mounting on Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to establish a timetable for his exit from Downing Street, especially after Andy Burnham’s significant win in the Makerfield by-election. A growing number of Labour MPs are calling for Starmer to facilitate a transition of power to Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, to avoid a contentious leadership contest.

According to BBC News, Burnham’s allies have urged Starmer to reflect over the weekend and listen to his cabinet ministers, MPs, and family. In a conversation earlier with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, she suggested that Starmer set out a timetable to leave office. However, the Prime Minister remains resolute, stating he will not “walk away” and intends to fight any leadership challenge.

Starmer emphasized his commitment to the role, asserting he was elected with a mandate and highlighting achievements in economic stability and immigration control. He expressed a desire to avoid internal discord within the party, urging unity among Labour members.

Burnham’s decisive victory, where he increased Labour’s share of the vote by 10% and defeated the Reform UK candidate by more than 9,000 votes, has intensified calls for a leadership change. Celebrating his win, Burnham declared it an opportunity to turn the tide and promised to carry the campaign’s energy forward.

Despite the pressure on Starmer, some ministers have voiced their support for him, asserting he has a mandate to lead and should continue to do so. The upcoming Greater Manchester mayoralty election on July 30 will further shape the dynamics within the Labour Party as potential leadership contenders position themselves for future contests.
