Arabic version: رئيس لبنان يعلن أن البلاد لم تعد بيادق في النزاعات
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that Lebanon would no longer serve as an “arena for anyone’s wars” during a televised address from the Baabda Presidential Palace on April 17, 2026. He emphasized the importance of the recent ceasefire with Israel, which he believes should pave the way for permanent agreements.
According to Al Jazeera, Aoun asserted that Lebanon is no longer a “pawn in anyone’s game” and expressed hope for a transition from ceasefire negotiations to agreements that uphold the rights and sovereignty of the nation.
The president’s remarks came shortly after a 10-day ceasefire was announced, following a period of violence that began on March 2. This conflict resulted in over 2,200 deaths and displaced more than a million people. Aoun acknowledged the support from international and regional allies, specifically thanking U.S. President Donald Trump and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their roles in achieving the ceasefire.
Aoun reiterated that any agreements reached would not compromise Lebanon’s territorial integrity or rights. He clarified that the ongoing negotiations should not be perceived as a sign of weakness or concession. The president’s objectives include stopping Israeli aggression, securing the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and ensuring the return of displaced families to their homes safely.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that Israeli troops will not withdraw from southern Lebanon during this period, raising concerns about the stability of the truce and the future of negotiations.
