Lime has introduced a new subscription service called LimePrime, aiming to offer a more affordable commuting option for residents in several UK cities. The service, launched at the end of February, provides a fixed price for the first 20 minutes of e-scooter or e-bike usage, followed by a discounted per-minute rate. According to BBC News, the initiative seeks to attract regular riders and encourage a shift in commuting habits.

In Salford, the subscription costs £1.50 for the initial 20 minutes, alongside a monthly fee of £2.99. Comparatively, a single bus ticket from Salford to Manchester is priced at £2, while a tram ticket costs £2.80. This pricing strategy positions LimePrime as a competitive alternative to traditional public transport options, particularly for younger commuters seeking cost-effective travel solutions.

Users like James, a 23-year-old recent graduate, and Paige, a 22-year-old student, have expressed interest in the service, highlighting its convenience and affordability. Riders can avoid crowded public transport and enjoy a faster commute, as e-scooters and e-bikes can directly reach their destinations without delays caused by traffic.

However, the e-scooter and e-bike landscape in the UK remains complex, with varying regulations across cities. For instance, Lime’s scooters cannot be used in Manchester city centre, where a different bike hire scheme operates. This patchwork of regulations can deter potential users from switching from traditional public transport.

Despite the challenges, the popularity of e-scooters and e-bikes is rising, with usage of the Starling Bank Bikes scheme increasing by 32% in the past year. As cities continue to explore options for sustainable transport, the balance between convenience and safety remains a critical consideration for urban planners and residents alike.
