Plans for a 200-unit “eco village” in Lismore, New South Wales, have stalled for more than five years, raising concerns among potential homeowners. According to ABC News, the Vue Eco Village was intended to address the housing crisis in the region, where rental vacancy rates have tightened to 0.6 percent.
The eco village, which promised environmentally friendly modular units and communal features, was initiated shortly after the Lismore Housing Strategy was released in 2012. However, the project has not progressed as planned, with a single faded “Sold” sign marking the barren site visited by ABC reporters this month. Former buyer Serge Killingbeck expressed disappointment over losing his $36,000 deposit after a dispute with the developer, Green Vision Developments.
Killingbeck stated that he has not received any updates regarding his deposit after he attempted to terminate his contract due to ongoing delays. Green Vision Developments has claimed that Killingbeck’s attempt to rescind the contract was “invalid and ineffective” and has retained his deposit while pursuing damages for breach of contract.
The developer has not responded to specific inquiries from ABC News regarding the status of the project or Killingbeck’s deposit. Meanwhile, the housing crisis in Lismore continues to worsen, with rental prices increasing by 36 percent since 2021. Experts warn potential buyers of the risks associated with off-the-plan developments, emphasizing the importance of thorough due diligence before committing to such projects.
