Liverpool City Council is mourning the loss of former Councillor Ali Karnib, a dedicated public servant whose leadership, generosity, and commitment to the community spanned more than 20 years.

First elected in 1999, Ali Karnib served the people of Liverpool until 2024, including three terms as Deputy Mayor. A former teacher who settled in Liverpool in 1984, Ali was a strong advocate for equity, education, and community harmony.

He also served as President of the Lebanese Community Council, playing a pivotal role in promoting multiculturalism and community connection.

Mayor Ned Mannoun paid tribute to his former colleague.

“Ali Karnib believed in serving the people of Liverpool with humility and purpose, and he leaves behind a legacy of service that will not be forgotten.” Mayor Mannoun said.

Ali served on numerous Council committees including the Civic Advisory Committee, Audit, Risk & Improvement Committee, Budget Review Panel, and Community Safety & Crime Prevention Committee, among many others. His contribution touched almost every area of Council’s work – from planning and economic development to youth engagement and community wellbeing.

“Ali Karnib brought people together and championed our diverse communities. Liverpool is a stronger, more inclusive city because of Ali’s leadership.”

“As a young person when I first joined Council, his success at being elected was inspirational.”

Ali’s legacy lives on through his son, Councillor Sam Karnib, who was elected to Council the same year his father retired.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sam and the entire Karnib family. They have not only lost a father and patriarch – Liverpool has lost one of its great champions,” Mayor Mannoun said.

“Ali’s life was defined by service, and his memory will live on in the City of which he was part.”
