Luigi Mangione is preparing to present a psychiatric defense in his upcoming murder trial in New York, as he faces severe charges for the killing of health insurance executive Brian Thompson. According to ABC News, Judge Gregory Carro confirmed that Mangione’s legal team will argue he was in a state of “extreme emotional disturbance” during the incident.

The 28-year-old defendant is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024. By asserting this defense, Mangione effectively admits to the act of killing but seeks to mitigate his responsibility by claiming emotional turmoil at the time. A successful argument could lead to a manslaughter conviction instead of murder, significantly reducing his potential prison sentence.

Judge Carro’s ruling on the psychiatric defense follows a secret hearing requested by the defense team two weeks prior. The judge indicated he would unseal records related to this hearing, which could impact Mangione’s federal case. His lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, argued that revealing these details could prejudice Mangione’s defense in the federal trial, where this psychiatric defense is not applicable.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges associated with the murder and stalking allegations. His state trial is scheduled to begin on September 8, while the federal trial is set for October 13. If convicted in either case, he faces a potential life sentence. The case has garnered attention due to the nature of the crime and the background of both the defendant and the victim, with Thompson being shot as he walked to a Manhattan hotel for UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference.
