Liverpool City Council has congratulated Campisi Continental Butchery on the remarkable milestone of 50 years of service to the Liverpool community, celebrating a proud local business that has become a household name across the region.
On 14 April 1976, Giuseppe Campisi opened E&J Campisi Butchery on the corner of Edmondson Avenue and Fifteenth Avenue in West Hoxton. The business was later renamed Campisi Continental Butchery, a name now widely recognised across Liverpool as a trusted local institution. Giuseppe built the business into a respected name, specialising in traditional Italian butchery and the production of southern Italian smallgoods.
Known to many as Joe, Giuseppe ensured Campisi Butchery became far more than just a business. It has long been a cornerstone of the Liverpool community, proudly supporting local sports clubs, emergency services, multicultural associations, and a wide range of community events.
Liverpool Mayor Mannoun said the success of Campisi Continental Butchery is a testament to strong family values, commitment to quality and a deep connection to the local community.
“At the heart of this business has always been Giuseppe and his family,” Mayor Mannoun said. “Together with his beloved wife Maria, Giuseppe raised three children: Jessica, Joanna and Eugenio; who have each contributed to the business in their own way, with some continuing to work there today. It is a true family legacy.”
The loyalty and longevity of Campisi staff is equally remarkable. Sam Lipari, who was first employed by Giuseppe as a 14-year-old in 1978, remains with the business today and has served as Manager for more than 45 years. Giuseppe’s son-in-law, Roberto, joined the business straight out of high school and has also played an important role in its growth and direction.
Over the years, Giuseppe expanded the business and opened additional locations, yet his commitment to the West Hoxton store never wavered. In 2007, Campisi Continental Butchery relocated to its current premises at 218 Fifteenth Avenue, West Hoxton: a significant step forward as Giuseppe took ownership of the property and entered a new chapter, while maintaining the values and traditions that had underpinned the business from the very beginning.
Mayor Mannoun also acknowledged that this milestone comes with a note of sadness.
“Sadly, in October 2025, Giuseppe’s beloved wife Maria passed away and was unable to witness this incredible 50-year milestone. There is no doubt she would have been immensely proud of all that Giuseppe and his family have achieved.”
“As Campisi Continental Butchery celebrates 50 years, I extend my sincere congratulations,” Mayor Mannoun said. “On behalf of the people of Liverpool, I thank Giuseppe, his family and everyone who has been part of this proud local story. Campisi Continental Butchery is a shining example of the small businesses that give Liverpool its character, strength and sense of community.”
