Australian sports presenter Mel McLaughlin has disclosed her diagnosis of stage 2 lung cancer. During the 7 News bulletin on Wednesday night, the 46-year-old revealed that she was diagnosed in December and subsequently underwent surgery to remove half of her left lung.

According to ABC News, McLaughlin described the experience as “triggering and traumatic,” particularly because her older sister passed away from lung cancer in 2015 at the age of 39. She expressed a mix of emotions, stating, “Obviously, you don’t want to worry anyone,” and emphasized her desire to prevent the stigma associated with lung cancer in her family.

Since the Sydney Ashes cricket Test at the start of January, McLaughlin has been absent from television while undergoing treatment. She shared that her recovery has been “slow but good” and expressed hope to return to hosting duties for the Commonwealth Games in July.

McLaughlin aims to raise awareness about lung cancer, which is often linked to smoking, despite being a lifelong non-smoker herself. She noted the stigma surrounding the disease, saying, “I feel like I owe it to my sister and I owe it to people who could get something out of this.” Her story highlights the importance of understanding lung cancer beyond its common associations.
