According to ABC News, Melbourne man Jordan Yap has been found dead weeks after he failed to return from a remote solo hike in Peru. Yap, 30, had been reported missing by his family after failing to check into a hotel and missing a flight.

Family and friends began search efforts after Yap did not return from the multi-day hike in Peru’s Huayhuash region. Friends announced the outcome on a social media page created to support the search, saying he had been found but did not survive, and asking people to remember him as “the vibrant man he was”.

ABC News understands that local authorities told Yap’s relatives and friends his body had been found in the Mitucocha Lagoon area. Mitucocha Lagoon, also known as Lake Mitococha, is a high-altitude lake in central Peru, about 200 kilometres north of Lima.

Yap had left his hostel in Huaraz on September 14 to attempt a hike expected to take about 10 days. He was due to check into a hotel on September 23, before taking a flight from Lima to Cusco the following day. His family raised concerns after he missed both arrangements, reported him missing and engaged a local private mountain rescue team.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Peru and offered condolences. Yap’s father, Vinh Dao, had previously said his son was an experienced hiker, though the Peru trip was one of his first solo journeys.
