Mourners gathered in central Gaza on April 9, 2026, for the funeral of Mohammed Wishah, an Al Jazeera journalist killed in an Israeli drone strike. The ceremony began at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah, where family, friends, and colleagues paid their final respects before carrying Wishah’s body to the Bureij refugee camp. Funeral prayers were held at the Grand Mosque, followed by burial in accordance with his wishes.

During the ceremony, mourners placed Wishah’s body at the spot where he had previously delivered live reports for Al Jazeera Mubasher, covering the ongoing Israeli attacks and the plight of Palestinians in Gaza. According to Al Jazeera, Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gaza’s Government Media Office, emphasized that Wishah’s killing is part of a broader pattern of violence against journalists in the region.

Al-Thawabta stated that the assassination of Wishah is part of a deliberate policy targeting Palestinian journalists, highlighting that 262 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023. He warned that such targeting aims to silence the Palestinian voice and obscure the truth from the world.

Family members recounted Wishah’s final hours, noting that he had shared a meal with one of his sons just before leaving for a reporting assignment, after which they lost contact until his death was confirmed. Wishah had continued his reporting throughout the war, despite the increasing risks posed to media workers.

The killing of Wishah, which occurred during a drone attack on his car, raises significant concerns regarding the safety of journalists in Gaza. Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the act as a “heinous crime” and accused Israeli forces of a systematic effort to intimidate media workers, calling it a violation of international law.
